The Air Max 1 is a tough base shoe to work with which sucks, as its one of my favorite Nike models. Most of the models Nike releases these days either feature odd/unpaintable materials and panels, poor color blocking, or worst of all…leather toe boxes. So when I was presented with the opportunity to work on a pair featuring the OG colorway – I was excited, but hesitant.
Working on iconic colorways, such as this, is often a hit or miss deal. Some people feel these models are perfect as is – frozen in time, never to be messed with. Then there are people like me and most other customizers who feel they can always add something to a sneaker to make it that much better.
From my experience in the past, I have found the best way to approach these classic models is to find the happy medium between changing the design to give it the look and feel of a one of a kind custom, while still preserving the original aesthetic that made that design/colorway timeless in the first place. Obviously, such a thing is not a simple task.
With all that being said, here is my attempt with the original colorway (white/sport red/neut. gray-black) of the Nike Air Max 1. Sport Red elephant print runs along the entire length of the mudguard accented with black and red detailing on the heel and tongue tag. Nothing major – just keeping it simple, classic, and clean like always.
